Are Counselling Services Tax Deductible in Canada?
Questions about mental health care often extend beyond well-being and into practical concerns like cost. One of the most common questions we hear concerns whether counselling services can be claimed on taxes in Canada. The answer is sometimes, and it depends on who provides the service and how it is paid for.
Are Counselling Services Considered a Medical Expense in Canada?
In Canada, counselling services may be considered an eligible medical expense if they are provided by a regulated medical practitioner as defined by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). This includes services provided by professionals such as psychiatrists and, in many cases, psychologists.
According to the CRA, eligible medical expenses can be claimed when they are paid for services provided by a practitioner who is legally authorized to practise in their province. Psychologists are recognized as medical practitioners for tax purposes in most provinces, including Alberta. This means that counselling provided by a registered psychologist may be eligible to be claimed as a medical expense.
Review the CRA’s guidelines here.
What Types of Counselling Are Typically Eligible?
Counselling services are generally eligible when they are:
- Provided by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist
- Paid out of pocket (not already reimbursed by insurance)
- Claimed within the eligible 12-month period
Services provided by a psychiatrist in Red Deer are usually eligible because psychiatrists are medical doctors. Counselling psychologists may also qualify, provided they are registered and authorized to practise in Alberta.
Counselling services provided by other professionals, such as social workers or therapists who are not recognized by the CRA as medical practitioners, may not be eligible for the medical expense tax credit, even if the care itself is valuable and effective.
What About Insurance Coverage and Tax Claims?
If your counselling services are fully reimbursed by an extended health benefits plan, those costs cannot be claimed again as a medical expense. However, if only a portion is covered, the remaining out-of-pocket amount may be eligible.
It’s also important to note that medical expense claims are subject to income-based thresholds. This means the credit applies once eligible expenses exceed a certain percentage of your net income. Because tax situations vary, we always recommend confirming eligibility with a tax professional or reviewing CRA guidance directly.
