Red Deer Psychologist: FAQ
At Onward Wellness, we understand that navigating mental health services can be complex. To assist you, we’ve compiled answers to some frequently asked questions about psychological services in Alberta.
What Is the Difference Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. They can prescribe medication and often focus on the biological aspects of mental disorders. Psychologists, on the other hand, hold advanced degrees in psychology and are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health issues through psychotherapy and other non-medical approaches. In Alberta, psychologists must be registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) to practice.
Is It Worth Talking to a Psychologist?
Engaging with a psychologist can be highly beneficial for individuals facing emotional, psychological, or behavioural challenges. Psychologists provide a safe and confidential environment to explore your thoughts and feelings, develop coping strategies, and work towards personal growth. Many clients find that therapy leads to improved mental health and a better quality of life.
How Long Does It Take to Become a Psychologist in Alberta?
Becoming a psychologist in Alberta typically requires completing a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, which can take six to ten years of post-secondary education. After obtaining a degree, candidates must complete supervised practice and pass examinations to become registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists.
What Is the Difference Between a Psychologist and a Registered Psychologist?
In Alberta, the term “psychologist” refers to individuals who have completed the necessary education in psychology. However, only those who have fulfilled the registration requirements set by the College of Alberta Psychologists, including supervised practice and examinations, can use the title “Registered Psychologist.” This designation ensures that the practitioner meets the professional standards for providing psychological services.
What Is the Difference Between a Therapist and Counselling?
“Therapist” is a broad term that encompasses professionals trained to provide various forms of therapy, including psychologists, social workers, and counsellors. “Counselling” refers to the process of working with a therapist to address personal issues, develop coping strategies, and achieve personal goals. Essentially, a therapist is the professional, and counselling is the service they provide.
Is There Free Counselling in Alberta?
Yes, there are free counselling services available in Alberta. Organizations such as Alberta Health Services offer walk-in counselling for individuals experiencing emotional or mental health issues. Additionally, programs like Rapid Access Counselling provide free, short-term counselling sessions.
Do You Need a Referral to See a Therapist in Alberta?
In most cases, you do not need a referral to see a therapist in Alberta. Clients can directly contact therapists or counselling services to schedule appointments. However, some specialized services, reduced payment plans, or insurance plans may require a referral from a physician.
How Much Is a Counselling Session?
The cost of a counselling session in Alberta varies depending on the practitioner’s qualifications and the type of service provided. The Psychologists’ Association of Alberta recommends a fee of $220 per hour for psychological services. At Onward Wellness, we adhere to this guideline, and many of our services are covered by health care benefits or other third-party coverage. We also offer pro bono services as part of our commitment to the community.
