Understanding ADHD: Beyond the Diagnosis

How to support focus, function and self-worth with mental health care in Alberta

Living with ADHD symptoms means more than having trouble concentrating—it often involves a lifelong pattern of navigating distractions, impulsivity and emotional overwhelm. At Onward Wellness, we see firsthand how misunderstood this condition can be, especially in teens and adults who were never formally diagnosed as children. That’s why we take a deeper, more compassionate look at ADHD in Alberta, offering therapy, workshops and tools that support the whole person—not just the symptoms.

At Onward Wellness, we provide a safe space for individual mental health assessments, including ADHD assessments for kids, teens and adults. Curious about our process?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention regulation, working memory and executive functioning. It’s more than “being hyper” or “not paying attention.” Many individuals with ADHD are highly intelligent, creative and driven—but they often struggle with managing time, staying organized, completing tasks or regulating emotions. These challenges can lead to frustration, shame and mental health issues if left unsupported.

ADD and ADHD; What’s the Difference?

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are often used interchangeably, but they are not quite the same. ADD is an outdated term that was once used to describe individuals who struggle with focus, organization and attention but without the hyperactive or impulsive behaviours. Today, the official diagnosis is ADHD, which includes several types—one of which is predominantly inattentive, closely resembling what used to be called ADD. Understanding the distinction helps parents, educators and healthcare professionals tailor support strategies to the specific challenges a child may be facing.

ADHD Across the Lifespan

ADHD shows up differently depending on age, environment and coping strategies. In young children, it may appear as constant movement or frequent interruptions. In teens, it can manifest through impulsive decision-making, academic struggles or emotional outbursts. For adults, it might look like chronic lateness, unfinished projects or difficulty following through on goals.

Many women and girls go undiagnosed because they tend to show less overt hyperactivity and more internalized symptoms such as anxiety or low self-esteem. This can lead to years of misdiagnosis or self-blame. At Onward Wellness, we offer support that accounts for the diverse ways ADHD presents, including in women, BIPOC clients and those navigating complex life transitions.

Moving Beyond ADHD Medication-Only Treatments

While medication can be a valuable part of an ADHD treatment plan, it’s not the only solution. Effective care addresses the emotional, behavioural and social impacts of the condition. Our team offers therapy that helps clients explore the underlying experiences tied to ADHD, including self-criticism, trauma and burnout.

Our specialized workshops also focus on executive functioning skills—like prioritization, time blocking, and habit-building—to help clients move from overwhelm to action. As Canada’s Centre for ADHD Awareness notes, a combination of therapy, education and lifestyle support is often the most effective approach for long-term success.

Supporting Children and Teens

Early support is key to helping kids and teens with ADHD develop resilience and self-worth. At Onward Wellness, we work with parents, educators and young clients to build strategies that work at home, in school and in social settings. We emphasize strengths-based language, emotional regulation techniques and flexible routines.

Adult ADHD: No Time Like the Present!

For adults just beginning to explore whether they have ADHD, the process can be equally validating and overwhelming. Many have spent years masking symptoms or internalizing struggles as personal failure. A diagnosis can offer clarity—but it’s what comes after that really matters.

Our therapy approach for adults with ADHD includes unpacking identity, rebuilding confidence and reimagining productivity. We help clients understand how their brain works so they can advocate for their needs, structure their time and pursue goals in sustainable ways.
